WHOLE HOUSE CARBON FILTERS

The cartridge type whole house filters are 1" and 1 -1/2" Big Blue filters in 10" and 20" lengths. There are many types of cartridges that can be used from simple spiral wound sediment to solid block carbon, down to 0.5 micron and even with lead and other heavy metal removal. However even at that size and with multiple units there still really is not enough volume of activated carbon to last very long. They would be more effective in areas where usages are lower.

Large tank units that can hold at least 1 cubic foot of activated carbon is more effective. The type of activated carbon used depends on the application and area. Well water systems may use either general use carbon (even that can be special for the area) or catalytic type carbons which are better for sulfur removal. The type of activated carbon better suited for our south Florida municipal water is a softer carbon for a wider range of removals and the relatively high tannin color in our water. This color formerly was bleached out when straight chlorine was used for disinfection. Now with the changes in disinfection the bleaching is much less effective. This type carbon that we use costs much higher than the carbons used by most suppliers who choose to use the more basic types but we design our systems to be the most effective for the location.

For even higher volumes we have larger tanks that may even backwash to lift and reset the carbon for a little more efficiency.

All carbon filters are supplied with post sediment filters to catch any carbon fines that may break off as the carbon is brittle and erodes in time.

A favorite saying of ours is that THERE IS NO MAGIC FAIRY DUST. There is no magical system or filter media. Units need to be designed properly for each application in order to get the best treatment. This includes the type of carbon, volume, flow rates, water source, tank sizing,...

It must be understood that with the high flow rates and usages (flushing toilets, etc) that basic removals can really only be achieved due to the practicality of the systems. Larger units use activated carbons that are larger in mesh, etc, than undersink units that can use compressed powdered carbons due to the much lower flows and volumes of the systems. It acts a bit like sugar. Granular sugar dissolves quicker than cubes because it has more surface area for the liquid to contact with. It is still recommended that a good undersink system still be used for the 99% removals of chemicals and organics.
